Having Fun with Handmade Jewelry

One of the first thoughts that come to mind when thinking of jewelry is a Tiffany’s blue box.  

Is there anything that can make a woman’s face light up quite the way it does when she is given one of those blue boxes?  But beautiful jewelry can come from places other than a jewelry store.  Handmade jewelry can be as beautiful as the jewelry in jewelry stores, more budget friendly, and fun to make if you are the crafty type.

There are many people today who make their own jewelry.  Some people make it for their own use, but there are many people who have created a profitable business from the buying and selling of jewelry.  Any pieces of jewelry can be handmade, including pins, earrings, necklaces and bracelets.  These beautiful pieces can be found at craft shows and flea markets.  If you prefer to do your shopping online, there are numerous websites for jewelers selling their handmade creations.  Most of these amateur jewelers make their products using beads and other items that anyone can purchase in a craft store.

 In addition to the typical market places for purchasing handmade jewelry, the buying and selling can take place in other venues, and be a good reason to have a party!  A great way to spend a “girls’ night” together is having a jewelry show.  There are a few ways you can do this.  First, someone who has made the jewelry can host a show, or have someone host a party for him or her.  This is a great way to get exposure for the jeweler, while having fun with friends.  In many cases, the jeweler will be happy to accommodate the guests at your party by taking orders for something designed to the guest’s specifications.  This will make the jewelry purchases even more unique.

Another way to have a “girls’ night” with handmade jewelry is to host a jewelry making party.  All you need is a variety of pretty beads, and the wire or other material you are planning to use to make the jewelry.  For instance, you can buy a package of beads and a pack of wire ready to create dangling earrings.  With a little creativity, you can put together a unique pair of earrings that no one else will be able to find in any jewelry store!  You can make a matching set of different jewelry pieces for your favorite outfit, or make inexpensive gifts for friends and family.

This kind of fun should not be reserved for just the adults at the party.  Once your children are old enough to no longer put things in their mouths like beads, you can have birthday parties and play dates for jewelry making.  The girls can make matching pieces of jewelry for themselves and their favorite baby doll.  This is an inexpensive, creative way to entertain a group of kids.  As an added bonus, you can send the party goers home with something they have made at the party that doesn’t require putting together multiple goodie bags for every child.

So the next time you admire a piece of jewelry someone is wearing, you can take the opportunity to craft a similar piece for yourself.  If you aren’t the crafty type, go online and do a search for someone who makes jewelry.  You can get something similar to the original piece you admired, while saving big bucks on your purchase.
