Summer Party
Decorations Made Easy
by Maria Hammel
If you are planning a party or two before summer ends and
the kids head back to school, here are some great ideas to make your party
special, and your decorations even more special. Have no worries if you are planning a cookout or pool party
and have concerns about your outdoor decorations. With a few pieces of wood, some paint and a few tools, you
can make pieces of art that can remain in the yard long after the last hot dog
is eaten.
One easy idea is to make a “Pool Party” sign for your front
yard. This will help newcomers
find your house, while getting guests into the party mood before they even get
to the pool.
To make the sign, use
a flat piece of wood, about 8 ½ x 11 in size, and a stick. You can put the sign on the stick using
strong glue, or by securing the sign to the stick using screws and a torque screw driver, or nails and a hammer.
With some paint from the nearest hardware store, you can
paint the words “Pool Party” on the wood, and use your imagination to paint
summer colors to decorate the rest of the sign. Even if you aren’t artistically inclined, you can paint the
background light blue and add some clouds with white paint. Or you can paint very basic flowers on
the board.
Once the pool party is
over, you can move the sign to the pool area where it can remain for the rest
of the swimming season. And don’t
forget to pull that sign back out in subsequent years to decorate your pool
area!
If you discover that making one sign is easy, you can use
the same materials to make other signs marking the barbeque area, the
volleyball court, etc. You can
also attach balloons to each sign to make it even easier to designate different
entertainment areas in a large yard.
And as with any party, the addition of the balloons will make the area
even more festive.
If you have already planted your summer garden beds, you can
clip some flowers and place them around your patio, deck or pool area. You can place the flowers in clear
glass bowls with water to have a floating floral display. Does anything say summer more than
bright colors and water! This is a
great, economical way to add pops of color to your outside living space. To really add some pop, be sure to
coordinate your flowers with your furniture cushion colors and umbrellas you
have in your yard.
And don’t forget, when you are busy picking flowers for the
floating bouquets, don’t forget to add a fresh layer of mulch to the flower
beds. A yard looks fresh, well
manicured, and ready for a party with a fresh layer of mulch on the beds.
This can be the beginning of creating decorations for your
yard that can be used throughout the year. And remember that outdoor decorations don’t have to stop
adorning your yard once the leaves begin to change. You can make wooden signs for your yard in the winter
too. The sign can contain holiday
messages or winter scenes as simple as several falling snowflakes. So happy decorating!
