Rather than cleaning up AFTER the kids,
try cleaning WITH them!
By Guest blogger Judy McGhee
If your kiddos are anything like mine, they want to
help you clean around the house. However, I’m forever battling to clean and
maintain a tidy home while allowing them to help me. While I never want to
stifle the enthusiasm they have to help me, I often find myself leery of
letting them handle any type of household cleaner for fear of their little
cleaner-soaked fingers wandering into their mouth.
Instead, I’ve learned some great tried and true
household cleaning tips using things found in my pantry – namely white vinegar,
baking soda and club soda. Implement any or all of these ideas to make cleaning
easier and more efficient!
Let Those
Window Washers Shine
Instead of using a store bought window cleaner,
vinegar cuts through grease and dirt while being kid-friendly.
· Fill a bucket with equal parts of water and white vinegar.
· Drop a couple small lint-free cloths into the solution.
Wring
them out and let your kids loose on those windows; both inside and out
You can
follow with a dry, clean cloth to make sure all the dirt is gone.
Bathroom
Lessons
While you may leave the scrubbing of the toilet to yourself, there are quick,
daily tasks that you or the kids can certainly do to keep your bathroom fresh
and clean:
· Daily spray the faucets and drains with vinegar and wipe them clean
with a paper towel.
·
For a deeper clean, sprinkle
baking soda over the vinegar and scrub with an old toothbrush (My kids may hate
to brush their teeth, but they love to brush the faucet – go figure).
·
Keep a small bottle of vinegar
and roll of paper towels under the kids’ bathroom sink so that each morning,
after brushing their teeth, they can spray, wipe and go!
Carpet Spills don’t have to be Disastrous
With kids, spills of juice, soda and who knows what else, is inevitable. Don’t
get caught unprepared. Spills can be cleaned up fairly quickly and easily with
baking soda and soda water.
Soda: White vinegar works well in
removing soda spills, using the vinegar in the same fashion as the club soda is used for
juice.
While I
make it a point to get a professional carpet cleaning at least every 6
months, I make sure I have plenty of baking soda and at least an extra bottle
or two of soda water in the fridge at all times.
