princess party

this adorable cake only took me 45 min to make this time!
the glass slippers that started this whole debacle...i was eye shopping at Kirklands and came across these gems. they are ornaments, and came in an array of colors. my soon to be three year old has been begging me for a princess party and, well you know the old adage,
"if the shoe fits...buy it!"

from that day, i was on the hunt for anything PRINCESS and not the themed kind either. i wanted this to reflect my zest for party planning. i needed to hold off for one more year before we fell into the proverbial commercialized "character" birthday parties. you know what i mean, "mickey mouse", "cars", "Winnie the pooh". sure there is nothing wrong with it, its quick, easy and the kids love it.
(and yes i threw in a few princess characters for her too, i mean it is kinda her party.)

I found the cool gem encrusted cake stand on clearance at my fav store TJ MAXX the cookie cutters at any craft store (except the frog he was from William Sonoma )

since kids never eat party food, i decided to strictly cater to them for this party. pb&j frogs and ham and cheese flowers. they were a hit, everything was eaten!
i made princess fruit wands using a melon baller and star cookie cutters for the top of the wand.

the party favor table, would not be a table without a center piece now would it. i found this crown at Rod Works spray painted it and huge fo jewels found at a local craft store.
the cool cupcakes crowns are starburst that i microwaved for about 5 sec. and rolled out on wax paper and then used a mini crown cookie cutter (its actually a play dough toy that came in my daughters princess play dough kit, and it was perfect!) you don't have to use star burst you can use laffey taffy, air heads...what ever you want. i just had these left over from Easter and had to use them up.

i didn't take pics as i went but here is how i did it:

1. unwrap your candy and place it in the microwave for 3-8 sec. the power varies in microwaves. you don't want to nuke your candy you just want it "warm" enough to work with. if it gets to hot it will be to sticky to work with and then when its hardened its yucky, (almost like you burned it) most of mine were in for 5 sec.

2. roll it out flat and use your cutter. you have to put the beads on while its still warm. i used nonpareils for the jewels. the smaller the better, the big ones weigh it down and cause the crown to droop. to get the round shape i wrapped it around a small wooden dowel.

3. dip the bottom in frosting and then in decorative sugar.

my inspirations for this came from Family Fun Mag check out their tips, they didn't have a cool cutter like i did so they came up with a really neat way to make these using a spoon.

both the tables...adorable!

i love love this poodle pinata!Tia Pan Trading Company had her for five bucks! of course it cost me twelve to ship her but still what a deal! most pinatas out there are...you know, not as cute!

oh here is the pic for the fruit wands...i knew they were somewhere.

the party went off with out a hitch and we all lived
